Be part of the story… Garden Team

The role

The Gardening team has created a beautiful oasis in the midst of Bury St Edmunds.

The historic sensory garden, is stocked with native plants including herbs and roses. Plants include herbs from through the ages, others offer sensory experiences, our rose collection add scent and romance!

A large lawn provides a performance space and a place to play and relax. Help develop and maintain this beautiful asset and work alongside novice and experienced volunteer gardeners.

What could I be doing?

You’ll be planting, tending and nurturing the borders, pots, troughs and lawns. A degree of physical fitness will be needed for some tasks, but light watering and deadheading may suit those who need to work more gently. Learn as you go, or share your expertise – there’s plenty to be done in the fresh air – and a friendly cup of tea to be shared!

What might a typical day involve?

Depending on the time of year, there will be planting, potting on, weeding and pruning to be done. Tools provided. Find out which plants will soon be needed, and propagate extras for us
at home.

Help organise and run plant sales. Help groups of adults and children to learn about gardening. Discover the uses made of historical herbs. Help the learning team to lead workshop sessions in the gardens. Gather and dry herbs and rose petals for use in workshops and learning sessions.

Sounds like it could be your sort of thing? What next?

We are open to the public 10:00am-4:00pm on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and 11:00am-4:00pm on Sundays. You are invited to pop in and see us at work, to find out more about volunteering roles.
