Abbey 1000 Celebrations at the Guildhall

5 Feb 2020

2020 is a special year for Bury St Edmunds.
It marks the 1000th anniversary of the Abbey of St Edmund.

From its founding by King Canute, the Abbey dominated Bury. It was one of the most famous, and wealthiest, holy sites in England. This all came to an end 500 years later, when King Henry VIII’s earth-shattering reformation transformed the Abbey into the magnificent ruins we see today. Although its monks, riches, and much of its structure have vanished, the Abbey still holds a treasured place in our town’s identity.

Throughout 2020, individuals and organisations across Bury will be marking the 1000 year anniversary with special events. Click the image below to find out more.

Here at the Guildhall we’ll be celebrating #Abbey1000 in our own unique way.
